Celebrating 250 years at Joshua Ellis

Joshua Ellis is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of luxury cashmere, woollen cloth and accessories and in 2017 we are proud to be celebrating our 250th anniversary.

Our journey began in the mill towns of Yorkshire during Britain’s textile heyday where we carry on the tradition, supplying high quality cloth and accessories to an international market. Artisan skills have been passed down through the generations and our thriving apprenticeship scheme, which covers all aspects of manufacture, design and sales, is bringing new talent into the industry to keep Britain at the forefront of global designer fashion.

Dashing Tweeds

Working hard to create modern urban woven textiles is Dashing Tweeds who take the best from the past and make it modern, interesting and relevant to life today.

Within their studio in East London they design and develop seasonal cloth collections using new woven structures on our hand loom. These are then produced by an appropriate British mill and released twice a year.

Joshua Ellis names top UK textile business

Joshua Ellis is extremely proud to have won the Textile Business Award at the 2015 UK Fashion and Textile Awards, held at the prestigious Tobacco Dock in London.

Managing Director Jayne Woodthorpe said: "Britain’s fashion and textile industry is thriving and we faced extremely tough competition in our category. This award highlights the fact that a continuing emphasis on innovation and excellence is ensuring that our business continues to be relevant today, exporting Yorkshire cloth around the world. It is a tribute to the skill and dedication of our local workforce, our high quality standards and the mix of traditional and new manufacturing techniques we use to create our pioneering luxury textile products."

Joshua Ellis has produced fine quality coatings, suitings and accessories in their mill in Batley, West Yorkshire since 1787. Today Joshua Ellis continues to supply many leading design houses around the world; working in conjunction with their design teams to produce new colours, structures and finishes for their luxury ranges. 2003 Relocation from Batley Carr to new premises

Joshua Ellis has been manufacturing at this site since the latter part of the 18th century following moving part of the business from the other side of Dewsbury to consolidate onto the one site in the 19th century. It is this historical connection, and our skilled staff, who in the main live in close proximity to the Mill, and in particular within the area of Batley Carr, that we began discussions in the boardroom as to the best way we may now serve our customers in the 21st century.

To provide the best possible service we have been considering the production options to enable us to meet the new demands for our exclusive products into current and future bespoke customers, and which can be better managed from design concept to final cloth or accessory delivery.
